Monocultivar Peranzana Review

Frantoio Muraglia’s Parenzana is their medium fruity extra virgin olive oil. They still use a stone mill to crush their olives, although ensure that the stone wheels turn slowly, so as to not produce much friction or any excess heat. This will coax the oil out using traditional means while infusing the olive with its oil. Then the paste is transferred to a modern extractor, to separate the oil from the solids, creating an incredibly creamy, soft, and delicious oil. The mouth feel is truly incredible as are the lingering phenols, and bitterness in the oil.

Oil type : Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Certified organic olive oils use organically grown olives and meet organic production standards for their region. Extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality olive oil. By definition it must have some fruity flavor, zero defects, free fatty acid level below 0.8%, and be derived by cold extraction below 27°C ~ 80°F.

Cultivars : Peranzana

There are hundreds of olive tree varieties, each with its own distinct taste and aromas.

Intensity : Medium

Intensity correlates to the amount of bitterness and/or pungency experienced when consuming an extra virgin olive oil. An olive oil with little bitterness that creates little to no sensation in the back of the throat is considered mild. A very bitter olive oil that causes a slight burning or spicy sensation in the mouth and throat is robust. We rate intensity between 5 values: Mild, Medium, Medium Robust, Robust and Extreme.

Harvest Date : Fall 2021

As a fresh food product, properly stored olive oil should be consumed within 2 years from the time of harvest for best flavor. Harvest runs from October through January in Northern Hemisphere regions, and from April through July in Southern Hemisphere regions.

Review

When I picked up this stunning ceramic bottle from Frantoio Muraglia I was hesitant, to say the least. The tag had all the information that I was looking for, harvest date, olive cultivar, estate, etc. and I was delighted to find the most delicious Peranzana upon opening. Usually, when I’m out shopping and discovering new olive oils, I shy away from beautiful bottles. It might seem silly, but so often producers try to catch your eye with exquisite handiwork, and stunning labels. The outside of the bottle often doesn’t share, or even, takes away from the contents of the bottle. So many marketing schemes within the olive oil industry entice uneducated buyers, it makes my skin crawl.

Frantoio Muraglia is one incredible family, doing amazing things in both their community and the olive oil industry. Found right in the heart of Apulia, the center of southern Italian olive oil country, four generations deep are still actively involved in the family olive oil business, cultivating 40 hectares of olive trees.

After they create their olive oil, they collaborated with local potters to create their unique rainbow bottles. Beauty with a purpose! The clay keeps the oil cold and light-tight to optimize transportation and storage. This ceramic bottle is stunning and proudly sits on my counter, I use it daily. It pairs perfectly with everything from avocado eggs benedict to whip up for a delicious brunch or a simple macaroni and cheese for an easy weeknight dinner.

This oil is very well balanced, with a beautiful harmony between the aroma and flavour profile. The finish is persistent spicy and warm with notes of green peppercorn and cinnamon.

Monocultivar Peranzana Pairs Well With

Fish

The complexity and balance of this oil is perfect to pair with seafood and white fish. Drizzle over the fish before baking and the flavours of the oil will soak into the fish, no other garnish is needed.

Pasta

Both creamy and tomato-based sauces are perfect for this extra virgin olive oil. My favourite is a simple raw tomato sauce, mixed with a little olive oil and garlic then tossed with hot fresh pasta. Simple and uncomplicated, just like this olive oil.

Bread

A great pair for baking in bread, and to drizzle on a slice! The creamy vegetal notes of the oil blend perfectly with a seedy harvest loaf.
