Turkey is often known for its table olives, which are significant in variety and very plentiful. The olive oil tradition is also very rich, deep and growing. Turkey has almost doubled its acreage of olive trees, dedicated to olive oil production. We’ll be seeing an increase of great olive oil from Turkey on our store shelves in the coming years. Many of the producers are women, taking over family businesses often returning home from years abroad to re-establish and renew the tradition of cultivating olives.
Turkey also hosts the Anatolian International Olive Oil Competition, the country’s first international olive oil competition which started in 2020 and again a women-run endeavour, continuing to promote and encourage quality olive oil. Great things are happening in this country when in terms of olive oil and it’s exciting to experience!
Back to this lovely Olizzi Everyday oil, it’s lovely, mild-medium in intensity. The Ayvalik cultivar is a common Turkish oil olive cultivar. This example is very floral in aroma with notes of anise, tomato leaf, and fresh artichoke. A lovely mix of both green and ripe fruit flavours in the mouth it is well-balanced and very approachable. Ripe juicy tomato, creamy viscosity with a delicate sweetness. Not overly bitter, with notes of fresh fennel, herbs, and artichoke. The pungency is mild, warming and very pleasant, with flavours of green and pink peppercorn that lingers beautifully.
Of course, living up to its name this Olizzi Everyday oil is extremely versatile in the kitchen. Use with roasted vegetables, stir-fries, salads, and simple breakfast foods like scrambled eggs or avocado toast, or an avocado eggs benedict would be decidant! It would also be lovely to incorporate in an olive oil cake, carrot cupcakes or other sweeter dishes.
