Ootopia Manaki Review

Bright and fruity, it is an authentic taste of place. A beautiful aroma of fresh ripe red fruits, raspberry, and black plum mixed with fresh cut grass. The taste is nutty with notes of green almonds and walnut, and a lingering green peppercorn finish. Medium intensity of fruitiness with a perfect balance of character and harmony in this example.

A perfect pairing with delicate white fish, seared scallops or grilled prawns tossed in honey and garlic. Perfect for salads, fresh vegetables and crudité platters. Lovely mixed with fresh berries and served over ricotta or whipped feta and grilled bread as an appetizer or elegant snack with a glass of rosé.

Oil type : Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Certified organic olive oils use organically grown olives and meet organic production standards for their region. Extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality olive oil. By definition it must have some fruity flavor, zero defects, free fatty acid level below 0.8%, and be derived by cold extraction below 27°C ~ 80°F.

Cultivars : Manaki

There are hundreds of olive tree varieties, each with its own distinct taste and aromas.

Intensity : Medium

Intensity correlates to the amount of bitterness and/or pungency experienced when consuming an extra virgin olive oil. An olive oil with little bitterness that creates little to no sensation in the back of the throat is considered mild. A very bitter olive oil that causes a slight burning or spicy sensation in the mouth and throat is robust. We rate intensity between 5 values: Mild, Medium, Medium Robust, Robust and Extreme.

Acidity : 0.2%

Acidity is one of the quality parameters set by the IOC for extra virgin olive oil. By definition extra virgin olive oil must have a free fatty acid level below 0.8%. Acidity CANNOT be detected by sensory analysis. This value is always determined by a laboratory.

Harvest Date : Fall 2022

As a fresh food product, properly stored olive oil should be consumed within 2 years from the time of harvest for best flavor. Harvest runs from October through January in Northern Hemisphere regions, and from April through July in Southern Hemisphere regions.

Review

Ootopia’s Manaki, a rare cultivar from the Peloponnese is a delightful, versatile olive oil. A delicious divergence from the traditional Koroneiki olive oils typical of this region. The Manaki trees are planted in the hills above the seaside village of Ermioni. The Manaki and all the Ootopia family of oils are created with care and precision. A stunning grove, curated and cared for by an experienced agronomist. He spends days amongst the trees ensuring through the year, ensuring the land and trees continue to thrive.

Use Ootopia Manaki in a Greek salad, with fresh or grilled vegetables. Enjoying it as a finishing oil over a Chicken and Apricot Tagine would be an incredible way to showcase this oil.
